after all the festivals and travels we went on a holiday, but first we went to see Spanish singer Mayte Martin at the Gardens Sabatini of the Palacio Real in Madrid – where we saw her actually 3 years ago as well – an uncompromising singer of flamenco and coplas and surely one of the best around today. To play a full show just with a guitarist and not being boring or repetitive means something. Control and emotion – expression of pain and sorrow, delight and happiness and everything in between, in the most simple but effective way.
Even when relaxing somewhere in Spain’s South we are surrounded by music – and this time we had a chance to see Josemi Carmona again with his quartet, playing songs from his album Las Pequenas Cosas, virtuous as always, jazzy and with great improvisations, especially in Jamie Cullum;s Gran Torino and his own Tangroove. That night, with only a small audience, he brought up some special guests: Juan Carmona, his fellow guitarist in Ketama
and the daughter of guitar legend Tomatito, Mari Angeles, who is an excellent singer, working on her first album with Josemi as a producer. A night to remember.
Two days later we met with Tomatito to have a drink and a bit of a chat and he played us a song from his forthcoming record – his most amazing version of the Charlie Haden composition Our Spanish Love Song. Breath-taking !
The rest was sun and beach or pool and wine and great food, especially seafood ….Heaven.
Now back and are already listening to some new CD’s of which I will inform you at a later point.
